Central Auditory Processing Disorders Testing
What to Expect During an Evaluation
Prior to arriving at the appointment the parent/guardian should complete the case history form. This can be downloaded from ACL’s website. Upon arriving at the appointment, the audiologist and parent/guardian can then go over the case history to fill in any missing information. The child will then undergo a full audiological evaluation. This is to verify that no hearing loss is present. If no hearing loss is present, the AP evaluation iwll begin. Testing will include:
- Auditory closure – ability to fill in missing pieces of information.
- Auditory figure ground – the ability to understand speech in the presence of noise.
- Binaural integration – the ability to listen to two conversations.
- Binaural separation – the ability to block out one conversation and attend to another conversation going on at the same time.
- Temporal patterning - the ability to remember and sequence information correctly.
- Binaural interaction – the ability of the two ears to fuse information.
- Auditory decoding – the ability to discriminate, sequence, remember, blend and take apart sounds within words.
